We Have Reason To Believe in Torah Min Hashamiyim

This video was taken of Rabbi Jacobs 1995 lecture at the New London Synagogue. Rabbi Jacobs’ controversial book We Have Reason to Believe (1957) grew out of discussions at a study group at the New West End Synagogue. It discusses what the statement ‘the Torah is from heaven’ can mean to a Jew today, in the light of modern thought, and how one can accept it with full intellectual integrity. In his talk Rabbi Jacobs responds to the repeated accusation that he does not believe in Torah min hashamayim by spelling out his beliefs on this question and by examining the history and various understandings of each term in an attempt to present the complexity of meaning underlying the above expression.
